Amplitude and Modulation of pulse

Post by Incony »

Ive been considering this for using it in wood ablation.

i.e not only the width of the pulse ( time ) but level ( amplitude ) in each and every pass of the laser.. i want to be able to control it.. automatically.
so.. i want the means to input the time of the pulse and its amplitude and then send that to the psu say on each pass of the laser...

not easy to configure i know.. i can do it manually ie set the pulse width and amplitude... so what are the options using the DSP ?

ultimately i want a stepped pulse something even more difficult to configure...

i just share to see if anyone has considered this path.

i am considering the possibilities of buying the lightobject dsp kit to replace the lihuiyu XB Super B1 board in my 80W XB 460 and i know i can create a simple pwm using nothing more than a NE555 but its manual.. not encoded... i could use optics to set the change in amplitude and pulse width too.. ie... if you are making left to right passes... at the end of each pass change the amplitude. and width. it only takes the psu 1 ms to accept the change.. but its not the way to go... its just a means..

so maybe there are other folks here who have thought about it and offer input.. ? it will affect my own decision to go lightobject or not..

maybe you think i am just a bit loopy... :) tell me why before you condemn me..

Why would you want to modulate the laser ?

What problem does that solve ?

Thanks

I am guessing it would give a version of "grayscale" to the output. On wood in particular, this would be nice to have.

Altering the peak V input to the psu as well as its length of time, will create texture and geodesics. since pwm on its own is a fixed peak V input, and on my psu an HY T80 that is 5V full scale - so one is always putting out the same power set from 0 to 5, and just altering how long for...

i want to alter how much power goes out , as well as the length of time - all the time..

80W for 10ms is not the same as 40W for 10ms... neither is 80W for 10 ms the same as 80W for 5 ms or 40W for 20 ms

i can make a variable pwm... its pretty much how tv remote controls work.. a coded repeatable set of pulses and i want to change the amplitude as well in the same way..

now, i understand that the result will depend on the material.. and why i need to be able to do it, to table the results...

lets suppose you have a colour on an image... even a grayscale - that represents a pulse width and a peak value. 256 of them.... if one could get the right values known for a material that carbonises like paper or wood,,, it becomes more than a print it will have 3D texture too..?

imagine then that your not actually turning the laser off at all... just altering the output, from very low to very high...at a known speed and value.. all the time its on. its greyscaling without dots.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pulse-amp ... modulation

positive PAM

lets suppose that greyscale 128 represents 5 ms pulses at 50W and so on..

ive no idea of the effect yet... i just see a direct link then between the original image pixel value and the laser output... and one could - given the known material - see a 3D preview of the likely effect.. based upon the depth of cut ( power over time ) and the pixel value ?

ok i sense then that focus point becomes important... and so would the z axis...
