The U-axis is intended to use for transportation at the end of a job, so when you want to make repetative things, you can use the U-axis to transport a new piece of material under the laserhead.
I use it to lift the bed when i want to multipass, for instance when the material is to thick to do it in one single pass.. Not that the edges are very good but it works.
During the repetative jobs, my Z-axis becomes the U-axis..I added some electronics to do this automatically.
Ergo: it will only move after the actual lasering part is done..

That is, for cylindrical engraving need to replace the driver axis Y on the rotary device driver? And, accordingly, change the settings?

Correct! You need the Y-signals for the rotary-unit. The settings on the "Advanced Functions" apply to the rotary when you use it instead of the Y-axis..
