DSP not working

Post by whmeade10 »

It seems that the DSP I received today my have an issue. I tested out the DSP by just connecting 24VDC only and powering it up. What should have happened is D16 should of been blinking after the DSP reset. What did happen is D16 through D20 along with D3 and D4 by the power input came on and stayed on. It seems that the processor isn't running or the DSP is caught in a perpetual reset. Has this happened to anyone else, and if so, what did you do to get the DSP working.

Thanks,
Bill

Just a guess but I would say the USB port would have to be connected to a computer as well and be able to talk to the software.
I would make all tests the same as real world. ie just as it would be in the machine.
The DSP works in conjunction with the software so I would start there first.

Thanks for the tip Rich, but I don't think the processor is running. I kinda wonder if it was programmed. I went ahead with the installation of the software and USB driver installation. I connected the USB cable and turned on the DSP and waited for at least 30 seconds for it to exit reset. When it didn't, I manually moved the X and Y axis to engage the limits switches. This should have brought the DSP out of reset but it didn't. Below are a couple pics of the DSP and LCD Panel.

After dicussion with my tech, he said that the card most likely damaged by the interference from the Co2 power supply. He said that you should never put the main board or other device so closed to the CO2 laser power supply as doing so, it may 'jam' the electromagnetic field high enough to cause a damage on the main board. Remember, the output from the CO2 power supply can go as high as 35KV. Any wire closed by the high voltage "flyback transformer" will generate electric 'glitch'. The board mostly 'toasted'.

In the worst senerio if the HV wire connection to the laser tube lose, or if the RED (HV) wire got damage, then the high voltage from the PS will try to find the shotest path to the ground to discharge through any conductive medium like the metal case. If that happen, most likely that DC24V terminal could appear tens or hundreds volt in your setup. Remember, always leave the CO2 PS away from any circuit board or dervice and you're running a big risk. Compact is good but don't underestimate the power of HV!

I will move the laser PS to a shelf above the electronics sled and put the 24VDC PS where the laser PS was mounted. That is the best I can do in my application with the 2.x laser.
