Presumably the different versions of the hardware require corresponding differences in the firmware to suit.

Exactly. V6,V7, or V8 are pretty much the same same. I think it is about chipset version issue and they distinguish one from other by the V number. As I know, V7 will be the "winner" and no more V6 or V8 from production
