Can anyone step me through Depth or "3d" engraving?

I've been banging my head trying to figure out how to get even the slightest variation in depth using Lasercad.

I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the "Grade engrave" option on bitmaps... but setting various values still has it pretty much doing black'n white.

Can someone give me some good "rough" numbers to start with? or maybe a better description of the settings I need to make sure I have set?

So from what I figured out, grade engrave creates a ramp around the object.

I already saw the video and the results of that weren't so hot... I did get some better results using lasercad's built-in dither function... Will try some more options tommorrow.
