Problem Upgrading MLE-40 FSL Laser with AWC 608 card

Post by Craig_Johnson »

I've reached the point where I have two questions on the integration of the 20-30-40w Power supply, The stepper motor controllers and the AWC 608 card.
The wiring diagram I found on this site has a power supply component that I don't seem to have. Some device that takes the wall power and converts it to 24v DC.
I have it circled with a question mark.

Do you guys sell this part? what one do I need? there are several.

Also I have confirmed that the cathode (negative wire from the laser tube) is fed thru the amp meter (and probably the adjustment dial) where your diagram shows
and LED read out. I'm assuming I need to replace the meter and dial with a digital device? Where do I get that?

I believe the power supply you're looking for is this one: http://www.lightobject.com/Dual-DC-36V- ... -P712.aspx

The power meter is this one: http://www.lightobject.com/3-digit-Mini ... -P457.aspx

And you'll need this isolated 5v power source to power the meter. It takes the 24 v DC and converts it to 5 v DC: http://www.lightobject.com/2405S-DC-DC- ... m-P84.aspx

There are several postings in the forum on how to wire the isolated 5v power to the meter.

Hope that helps,

Bob

I'm really kind of tired of throwing money for new parts at this thing. I thought the 20w-40w-60w power supply was going to replace my existing powersupply, but now I need two power supplies? The old machine only had one powersupply. The other parts seem straight forward enough, but I don't want to be buying redundant parts.

Are we absolutely sure those are the parts I need to get this thing working again? I'll need to order them today if thats the case.
Marco, is this right?

Your 20-30-40 watt power supply drives the laser and gets it's input from the controller but you need a 24volt dc power supply to drive the controller. I actually have 4 power supplies in my machine, the laser power supply, the 24/36 volt power supply, a 12 volt power supply to drive an exhaust fan, and a 5 volt regulated power supply to drive an arduino controller and relay board.

Sorry, I don't think you'll find a single power supply that can do it all.

How sure are you that the powersupply you linked above is the one I need for this project?
I don't really have time to send it back for a replacement...
The other parts seem to fit the schematic fine.

The laser only had the one powersupply to start with, I'm assuming thats because it was an analog system and
now I have a complicated digital system?

Well, I have the same DSP controller you have. I built my laser machine from Marco's parts, a 600 x 400 with the 80 watt reci tube. Marco put together a list of parts I needed to build the machine. This is the power supply he told me I needed to run the DSP controller. I bought it, put the who thing together and have had it up and running for weeks.

The controller requires 24 volts DC to power it. This power supply puts out 24 volts DC as well as 36 volts DC but I don't use the 36 volt terminals, only the 24 volts.

Take care,

Bob

The machine I have used the same control panel. You can reuse the meter you already have. You don't need the adjustment pot, the awc-608 will control the laser output. The only button switches you need are the ones for the light and air pump. I have the e-stop wired to shut off all power to the machine and used the key switch to turn the machine on/off.

Looks like I'll order this one: http://www.lightobject.com/DC-24V-15A-S ... -P447.aspx
plus the other digital items. Thanks for the help
