For cutting the same speed and power, should I use manual control instead of PWM, with manual control will it
-make the cut look smoother ?
-save the power supply from on and off 20Khz/sec ? thanks

Power supply is NOT being switched on and off. There is a circuit inside the power supply that looks at the on/off cycle of the PWM signal and interprets it as the % equivalent of 5v max. 40% = 2 v. The resulting value (2 v in the example) is what is fed to the output control of the power supply.
