Questions about wiring from controller to laser

Post by Agent Sevan »

I have been working at getting my obsolete software and hardware upgraded. I have managed to get everything from my old Kern setup running, moving anyway, and am at the step up pf firing up the laser, I think.
The laser itself is a Universal 60 watt Co2 laser with an Iota DLS 48-20 power supply (photos attached). Also attached is a photo of the wiring connection into the laser as well as screen shots of the OEM wiring diagram.
I am totally lost as to what to run from the TTL and PWM outs on the controller to the laser.
As shown in the connection photo, the only 2 wires connected to the 3 and 4 pins.
Can anyone help me get pointed in the right direction?

Hello Agent Sevan:

It look like that the laser you have is not a regular CO2 laser but a RF laser because the power sources is DC48V, instead of high voltage laser power supply (LPSU)
What kind of controller do you have?

By looking at the block diagram, I think it is pretty easy to fire the laser by applying PWM output signal from the laser controller to PIN 3 and PIN 4. However, you do need to take care the Interlock and the other harness like the Key+ Key-. In most case, you may need to shorted this two pin to enable the laser, same thing happen to the Interlock.

I believe that by injecting +5V to the PIN4 with PIN3 to the ground, the laser will fire in full power.

It is just my though and you take the risk to do the test. I will not take any responsible should anything got damage.

Universal Laser is the brand name of the CO2 laser that is mounted on my table. I'm using the AWC608 as my controller. I was previously on a Kern setup, which is all proprietary software and hardware. Excellent if you buy it new, but crazy expensive to join the tech support/upgrade club.
I have talked back and forth with a tech support guy at Universal and I'm about to make the big test.
I know there's another big question coming after she fires up, but I'll save that for then.
I have been documenting the upgrade and I'll make sure to share the links when it's all wrapped up.

What is the 48V DC power is used for?
Can you post a picture of the laser tube?
If it is a regular CO2 laser tube, then it must be water cooled and must be driven by a high voltage laser power supply which output as high as 26Kv for a 60W laser tube
