Looks like some of the stepper wiring or microswitch wiring caused a fire and stopped the head moving.

Luckily I had an extinguisher on hand.

Most parts are recoverable luckily. Mirrors and lenses seem ok. Laser still fires, no mission critical metal warped. Melted plastic is removable.
