Network Mode not working on Windows 8 64bit

I have a DSP controller that works fine with my older windows 7 computer. I tested them one after the other..
If I copy the entire laser cad folder (with all the same settings) from that computer to windows 8 it opens fine but never connects with the network option. It just says "Communicating unsuccessful!" when I try to push any move buttons.
I have tried a new install on the windows 8 comp and same issue.
I really need it to work via networking and not USB as I am across the workshop from the machine.. it worked fine on this computer before upgrading to windows 8.
Is there a missing driver or something needed for networking in windows 8? Does anyone else have it working?
I tried turning windows firewall off but makes no difference.
Any ideas?
