Just wanted to give a little update for anyone who might be checking in.

I have a guy building me a frame for the cutter right now. It will be ready by the end of next week.

I powered up the DSP for the first time using a 24v power supply and noticed a little voltage flowing through the power supply case and the jacket of the USB cable. After talking with Marco, he said these items sometimes put out stray voltage, mainly the laser power supply, so in order to make sure I have a good ground I went ahead and drove a new grounding rod directly outside the garage and ran a 6 gauge copper wire through the wall so that I can mount it to the metal frame. I hooked it up to the power supply and now I have 0 stray volts. GROUND your systems folks!!!!!

Apparently the 7X DSP has been having compatibility issues with both windows 8.1 and the plugin for CorelDraw 7. Unfortunately, I'm running both lol. They just released a new version of LaserCAD in the last day or so and Marco is running tests. Hopefully that will atleast have the LaserCAD talking to the DSP soon!

Do you have Win7 available? If so, run it on Win7. If not, then it is still 'OK' to run the X7 on Win8 by using Ethernet instead of USB

Andy just informed me of that. I got it running in a windows 7 machine I took from my office for the weekend. I'll need it next week though. As soon as we get the motors spinning, I'll get the Ethernet up and running.

Well with Marco's help, we got the steppers up and running. Apparently I don't know how to read a stepper motor wiring diagram, but he recognized the issue and got me up and running.

To fix my Windows 8.1 USB driver issues, I bought a crossover cable. It looks like a Ethernet cable, but is designed to connect two PCs together without the use of a router. The one I got is in the link below.

After setting the static IP, the X7 DSP connected and worked great. I had to temporarily disconnect my WIFI network for it to work though. That is fine with me for now. Once I get everything setup, I'll probably get a wireless Ethernet adapter and just run it through my home network. That way I can use my laptop without even having to physically connect it to the CNC.

I'm at a stand still until I get the stand finished. Hope the welder works through the weekend! lol

I received the frame on Sunday, and after 3 cans of brake cleaner, a roll of blue shop towels and 7 cans of Rustoleum paint, I got it painted and in my garage before the rain and the Superbowl started. I think it turned out really well. I'm still planning out the wiring, but I have both cable chains installed with the air assist cable, all 4 limit switches and the X-axis stepper wired up. Next step is to attach the gantry and start mounting the electronics. The overall size of the table is 110" long by 72" deep. Also, if you look at the bottom right hand corner of the frame, you can see I mounted a grounding cable to the frame. I ran a 8' grounding rod into the ground right outside the garage, and ran a 6 gauge copper wire through the wall and mounted it to the frame. I should have a really good ground now for everything.

We gotta get Marco to put an angled control panel on the frames he sells. I think it would be a nice addition.

Yea, my original drawings didn't have it, but the welder called me to come by when it was all tacked together, before he finish welded it. I said lets put a panel on it right here and he slapped it on there. I'm glad he did. It would be too tall to put the controls on the top.

Two questions:

1. How do I wire up this.

I'm assuming VI is my input high voltage and VO is my output 5V. But I only see 1 ground plug. Do both the high and low voltage grounds go in the same hole?

2. I have my X and Y limit switches hooked up for the origin position and they work great. But the two max limit switches aren't doing anything. Are they wired up different. I see there is a 24v source on the limit hook ups that I haven't used.

I have my 120V systems hooked up. It will use two 20 amp legs so that I have enough power to run everything. They will both run on relays linked to a common master and the emergency switch, so everything will be cut off with a single switch. Also the chiller and vent fan will be on relays, so I can use my fancy little stainless steel LED buttons I got.

What are you using it for, Taylor?

It would go with the digital meters, if you're using them.

I'm in the process of revising the BOM on my build thread, and that's one of the items coming out as I've gone with the analog display instead.

the laser pointed on the beam combiner. The literature said it runs on 3-5V. But yes, I did get the digital mA gauge.

Mine laser pointer is powered off one of the 5V outputs from the controller.

Oh ok. Well I still would like to know how to hook up the 5V unit. It says it uses a common ground. I guess that means you hook both ground wires up in the same place. I don't know for sure though and don't want to burn the unit out.
