Grade engraving

Attempting to run test with the grade engrave function in each layer of LaserCAD. Jus can't see m to get it to work. Instruction manual seems pretty straightforward, but no matter what I set it to, no grade engraving is visible. What are the proper setings to get say, a 45° grade engrave around letters for something like rubber stamps. Anyone done this with laserCAD?
