LEDs and Drivers

Postby bwells » Sat May 22, 2010 3:28 pm

I want to combine 8 of these LEDs into a series string.

Do you sell an LED driver I can use to maintain a constant current for these 8 LEDS? I plan to power the 8 LEDs with a 12 volt battery and had planned to use the appropriate resistors to drop the voltage to the rated voltage.

Put all LED in parallel and use a 3Watt LED driver should be good enough to drive it well

Thank you for the suggestion.

Can you tell me how that will work out? I am just learning about building these LED circuits.

  • The forward voltage of each LED is 1.4V. In parallel, the voltage will still be 1.4v. But I plan to use a 12v battery to drive my circuit. And the driver is rated 5-8 volts. I cannot put 12v to this driver, right? What keeps the LEDs from getting more than 1.4V they are rated for?
  • The IF for the driver is 750mA and the IF for the LED is 140mA. 8 LEDs in parallel would mean the IF is 1120mA. That is well below the 750mA from the driver. So will my LEDs be bright enough? Don't I want to get closer to 1120mA?
  • Finally, I see the driver is rated at 3watts. Can you tell me how the 3watts fits into the equation?

Thanks for your help!

I'm interested in the follow up answer as well. Also, I am planning on using the 10mm LEDS as well, but would like to run 18 in three three rows of 6 or ideally 20 using 2 rows of 10. Can this be done with the driver? Maybe 2?

Thanks.
