20A Current Meter (5735)

Post by Paul Stoops »

I want to use this meter to monitor the current thru a 3HP 240VAC motor running about 18A. Is the high start current (~50+A) going to be within the overrange limits of this meter without damage to the meter?

Or should I exchange the meter for a 200 ampere AC model (8135R200A). Does this 200A meter require an external shunt?

Am I correct in assuming that the meter input is in series with one of the motor leads such that the entire motor current is passing thru the meter?

Thanks,

When a motor startup, it always draw more current then it's RMS rating. Sometimes it will drasw double! So, for safety, you better get 50A current meter or above. Or turn off the meter befor starting up the motor.

Yes, current meter should be connected in series to the load
