EPM-8135R500VAC 240V connection

I purchased the EPM-8135R500VAC voltage meter (http://www.lightobject.com/3-12-Digital ... -P227.aspx). It has one small wire for the input+ which I hooked a 120v leg up to and it read fine. But it's a 240V that I need to measure. When I hooked the second 120v leg up it fried the wire. So basically two 120v legs going in to the input+ wire fried it. How do you hook this up for a 240V connection. I ordered another one and would like to get this one right. Probably something dumb on my end. Also what is the metal post sticking up from the circuit board? About a 1/2 inch wide with a hole in it.
