AWC708C X7 upgrade from MPC6515 laser won't fire

Post by mwss »

Hello,

Has anyone upgraded to the AWC708C X7 from a MPC6515?

I just made the switch, and everything seems to be working besides the laser tube.

Previous, I had the Ground, TTL, and Analog Input connections to the laser tube from the MPC6515.

I wired these to the Ground, TL, and PWM inputs on the X7. But the laser doesn't fire.

Could I be missing something obvious here? No water connection, no safety switch were connected per the MPC6515.

MPC6515 pin out, old system used 1 (gnd), 2 (analog), and 4 (laser on/off). So I wired these to Ground, PWM, and TTL, respectively.

Many thanks in advance!

Did you forget to ground the water protection on the laser power supply

Would you think the MPC6515 grounded the water protection in a different way than the X7?

Only because I was doing a pin by pin replacement of the MPC6515 for the X7. Maybe in my machine they didn't grounded the water protection but I need to do so for the X7?

Thanks for your quick reply!

Best way IMHO is to make a connection from WP to GND on the laserpowersupply and connect the Waterflowswitch between Protect and GND of the laser1 Connector of the AWC708C. So the controller will hold the machine when the water doesn't flow (or the flowswitch is malfunctioning).
As the AWC708C has 2 laseroutputs, you have to connect the Protect of laser2 to GND aswell.. Else there will be no laserfiring..
On the Options > System Options > Manufacturer Parameters please checkmark the IO-Waterprotect... Or, better, do this in the AWC itself by entering this menu on the display by pressing Shift-Stop (in some cases it doesn't seem to be possible to set this via LaserCad.. I think this is/was a bug)

by the way I don't have a waterflow switch, not great I know, but never had it in the old system.

But sounds like I have to ground the protect on the X7 to get it to fire.

So, I will short WP to GND on the laser power supply, then I will short Protect to Gnd of Laser 1 and 2 on the X7, and see how that goes.

Good to put in water flow switch at some time, of course. Sounds like the X7 makes it easy to do so.
