3 axis motion control

I have a k40 laser that I have upgraded using the light object X7-DSP, my question is this, is it possible to display real time z coordinate along with the X and Y, I am trying to rotate something very small a specific degree, and I can't do that without Z or U coordinate control.

how about using a digital calliper. one side fixed to your frame and the other side to your bed (z-axis)?
cheap and accurate...
