3d engraving on wood using DSP. Any pointers?

Post by yaddatrance »

I know its not really designed to do this (Eagerly awaiting new DSP with gray scale engraving) but I've been playing with "3D" engraving and noticed if I crank image size up too high it crashes the PC or the DSP.

Image

~1024x1024 is pretty much the limit I can get it too (about 6" in diameter) at 100 points per cm 1-bit floyd dithering and engraving in a single pass.

I can "ghetto" higher quality 3d by saving layers of bitmaps and engraving in layers, but thats pretty tedious. I was hoping that by turning power down and doing a real slow raster, it would follow the dots, but it looks like there's some innate max resolution.

Anybody else have other tips, tricks or pointers? Or have any idea what the actual max sizes for images are?
