need help with current limiting.

Hello I am a novice with hobby cncs. I am trying to set up a three axis board. If my stepper motors pull 3 amps per phase can I limit the current? I read another posting which uses the formula

Phase current= Vref/5rs. Also it said to measure Vref at pin #10. Where is pin 10 located? I have knowledge of electronics so replacing the 2 watt resistor is not a problem.
