Not able to setup WiFi with supplied TP-Link box

Hi, this is my first post here. I've purchased the T9+ DSP Laser Controller with WiFi module and am now trying to get the WiFi up and running. According to the manual I have to connect to the TP-Link box first, which should have SSID "puhan" or "LaserSoft". However in my case the SSID is "TP-LINK_252D" and it has no password configured. I have connected my phone to this network and setup the machine's IP address as instructed. When I open the LaserControl app, it hangs forever on the into screen, showing some Chinese test and a picture.
My guess is that someone forgot to flash the right firmware on the TP-Link before shipping it.
How can I get this one up and running?

The old manual is outdated. The IP is 192.168.1.xxx

OK, I've changed the IP of the laser controller but that doesn't change the behavior. The app still hangs on the startup screen.
