does anyone know offhand the focal length of the 18mm laser head sold here - from the tip of the head? I don't have any tools at home to measure the parts accurately...

Focal length changes depending on the type of lens used, not the physical head. A lens with a wider beam (kerf) will give a longer focus length and a deeper cut. If you decide on your lense then you could estimate the focal length.

are there any gages that are available to set the focal length for a 18mm f50.8 lens. I will be cutting bass wood no thicker than 1/8" thick. most everything will be 1/16 or 3/32 bass wood as well as 1mm and 2 mm styrene. it would great if some sort of gage is available as I don't want to have to spend hours and waste material on trying to figure it all out, It took me 6 hours to get the mirrors aligned to be able to get the laser just to etch. it took 5 passes to cut through 1/8 basswood at 60% power and speed of 25 I know it should not take that many passes to cut 1/8 basswood.
