Stepper Motor Settings

Post by Tim »

I wanted to share some information regarding my stepper motors. I purchased my machine in June of 2015. The "X" axis uses a Smooth Step brand stepper motor with a part number of 17HA512H-22P2. The "Y" axis is labeled 17HA116Y-22A. Attached is the data sheets for the motors.

The datasheets made it very easy to calculate the amperage and um settings. I hope this helps someone.

Although there is a rated current specified (0.5A and 0.6A resp.), it can be set different. First you start with these values for the current. if the motors stay cold, you may increase the current a bit till they get warm after half an hour.. This will increase the torque..
for the um settings you have to make a calculation:
you need to know the microstepsetting of the driver, the number of teeth of the driving timingpulley and the pitch of the timingbelt.
These motors have a stepangle of 0.9 degrees. That means 400 pulses per rotation.
If the pulley has 50 teeth and the pitch of the belt is 2mm, every rotation means 2 x 50 = 100mm travel.
If the microstep is set to 1/16, you need 16 x 400 pulses to rotate 360 degrees = 6400 pulses.
So 6400 pulses give you 100mm travel. For every pulse that will be 100/6400 = 0,015625 mm or 15,625 um
You have to fill in your own values for microstep, beltpitch and number of teeth ofcourse..

Get it?

Thanks for the info quite informative. I have no idea where did you get it from.
I had the same motors in the K40, and I was surprised, because they are quite good stepper motors.
0.9 degree steps, and "Smooth" is not a crap noname manufacturer at all.

The data is directly from Smooth.

The motors use a 20 tooth pulley and the belt pitch is 2.032mm. Using 1/8th step should be 12.7uM per step.
