40w laser and 3.6mm plywood cutting.

Post by pwoyorkie »

After upgrading my k40 to the x7 kit i was hoping to get a little better performance cutting ply.

Im using the air assist head with a 600 litre per hour aquarium pump and cutting at 70% power at 8mms yet is taking 3 passes to even slightly breach the other side of the ply.

I've worked out the optimum focus length and im confident that its focused well.

What am i missing?

What is your focal length?
Try to lay your focalpoint halfway the material so if it is 8mm thick, lay your focalpoint at 4mm depth.
Just a guess,but with 40 W at 90% (so 36W) i think a speed of about 6-10 mm/sec would penetrate the plywood.

Some plywood contains a chalk-like filling.. there you will have some problems cutting all through..

Well I stripped everything down and had a look in more depth. It seems the focal lens was sitting at a bit of an angle. I've now sorted it and cutting no problem.
