Range on 12 channel wireless controller

I recently purchased a 12 to 1 wireless controller they work fine when the 2 units are next to each other. I then proceeded to travel away from it and at about 100 feet line of sight lost controlling ability. This was out door no obstructions. We need guarnteed 500 ft. The specs were 1000 -1500
